The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) was established on March 14, 1979, and gained recognition from the International Olympic Committee in 1980. Since its inception, the QOC has been instrumental in promoting sports and the Olympic movement within Qatar.

Vision and Mission

In March 2023, the QOC unveiled its strategy for 2023 to 2030, encapsulated by the slogan “Vision, History & Achievement.” This strategy aims to:

  • Achieve excellence in sports performance.
  • Promote Olympic culture and values.
  • Enhance sustainability in sports.

The QOC is committed to fostering healthy lifestyles among Qatar’s residents and developing elite Qatari athletes to compete on the international stage. A significant focus is also placed on providing equal opportunities for women in sports, a commitment evident since Qatari female athletes first participated in the Olympics in 2012.

Key Initiatives and Projects

The QOC has implemented several initiatives to promote sports and physical activity:

  • National Sports Day: An annual event that unites the Qatari community through various sports activities, emphasizing the importance of physical fitness.
  • Schools Olympic Program: Encourages youth participation in sports and instills Olympic values such as respect, friendship, and excellence among young athletes.
  • Qatar Women’s Sports Committee: Dedicated to promoting and supporting female athletes across various sports disciplines.
  • Qatar Athlete Development Pathway: Provides structured support for athletes, coaches, and officials at every level of the sporting pathway.

Hosting Major Sporting Events

Qatar has established itself as a hub for international sports by hosting numerous prestigious events:

  • 2006 Asian Games: Doha hosted the 15th edition of the Asian Games, marking the first time the event was held in Qatar.
  • 2022 FIFA World Cup: Qatar became the first Middle Eastern country to host the FIFA World Cup.
  • 2030 Asian Games: Doha is set to host the Asian Games again, with plans to deliver an exceptional experience for athletes and spectators.

Through these efforts, the QOC aims to inspire and engage young people, raise awareness about the importance of sport in everyday life, and forge global friendships.
